Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a specialty of dentistry that deals with study and diagnosis of diseases affecting oral and maxillofacial region. The practice of oral pathology include diagnosis and research of oral and maxillofacial diseases, by utilizing traditional methods such as histopathology, cytopathology and microbiology , as well as cutting edge technologies.
The functions of the department include teaching of undergraduate students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year BDS students. The 1st year students are taught Dental anatomy, Oral histology, embryology and physiology. The 2nd and 3rd year students are taught Oral Pathology, Microbiology and Forensic odontology. The histopathology lab of the department is well equipped and does routine tissue processing and diagnostic reporting. In addition to training of undergraduate students and interns, the department has a programme of screening and early diagnosis of precancerous oral lesions.
